What Is The Order Of The Arrow

Dr. E. Urner Goodman, founder of the Order of the Arrow, once said:

The Order is a thing of the spirit rather than of mechanics. Organization, operational procedures, and all that go with them are necessary in any large and growing movement, but they are not what counts in the end. The things of the spirit are what count:

Brotherhood - in a day when there is too much hatred at home and abroad ...

Cheerfulness - in a day when the pessimists have the floor and cynics are popular ...

Service - in a day when millions are interested in getting or grasping, rather that giving.

The Order of the Arrow is the National Brotherhood of Campers and Scouters who best exemplify the scout oath and law in their everyday lives. The program promotes scout camping. It also promotes brotherhood, cheerfulness, service.
The OA is often referred to as the Honor Society of Scouting

The OA just like the Boy Scouts Of America. Their Members are broken down into smaller groups. See Below

The order, Just like any worthwhile group has a mission or a purpose. They have something to accomplish. It reads as follows...

THE PURPOSE OF THE ORDER
To recognize those campers - Scouts and Scouters - who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives and by such recognition cause other campers to conduct themselves in such manner as to warrant recognition.

To develop and maintain camping traditions and spirit.

To promote Scout camping, which reaches its greatest effectiveness as a part of the unit's camping program, both year-round effectiveness and in the summer camp as directed by the camping committee of the council.

To crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others.
