Many people ponder the question, "How did such a large organization like the Boy Scouts of America start out"? Well, the whole scouting movement was started when a young man in England did a good turn. An American, William D. Boyce got lost. He asked a young man for assistance. The young man showed Boyce the way. Mr. Boyce was extremely grateful, and offered the boy some money. The boy refused to take up on the offer, explaining to Boyce that he was a scout. Boy was particularly impressed, so he met with Baden Powell, the founder of scouts in England. After meeting wth Powell, he knew scouting was a program that would be good for the boys in the United States.
On Feb. 8, 1910, Boyce, a group of businessmen, educators, and political leaders found the BSA. The birth of Scouting in America is still celebrated on Feb. 8 today.
It is unsure what ever happened to the boy in England who helped Mr. Boyce, but we will always remember him for his significant role in BSA history. Long live the spirit of Scouting.
